The article deals with the objective laws of the themes of the modern orthodox prose and particularly with the problem of spiritual evolution of the characters. Based on the works on Christian metaphysics the author determines specifics of spiritual transformation of the characters of ‘the small prose’ by archpriest Nikolay Agafonov. And as an illustration to that the story «Consolation in old age» is being analyzed.
